Once again there is one thing I can’t write about in Slovene… one thing that touches a feeling deep inside… that thinking about breaks my heart a little bit…
You know… a long time ago… huh, REALLY long time ago I was a fan of this Croatian group called Colonia. It was one of the few I actually knew the title and performer of the songs (never really cared about such “details” and usually just barely knew the title of a song I liked and heard on the radio). It was about that time I got a CD player and Colonia was the one group of which I eventually bought all the original CDs.
I was not a “concert fan”, preferred to listen to recorded music. However, more than 15 years ago, I stumbled across an upcoming concert by Colonia in a nearby small town. My boyfriend at the time had no interest in accompanying me to this event that really meant a lot to me! So I decided to go with some friends. Looking back I do believe it was some kind of destiny… all but one friend ended up canceling… so we went… me and this guy I was trying to set up with one of my best friends. We had a blast! And before anyone makes any indecent assumptions… he was the perfect gentleman.
Long story short… eventually I broke up with my boyfriend because we had few common interests. This (boy) friend never got together with my (girl) friend, because they had few common interests (obviously I’m a bad matchmaker 😉 ). 15 years later I have 3 gorgeous kids with the guy that was the only one willing to go to that “fatal” Colonia concert 😀
Looking back. that concert was the moment we clicked and found the connection that would bring us to an actual first date months later. Since then we went to several events where Colonia performed and their songs were always “there”… they were and still are THE music that makes us both think of each other and remember the early days.
So you can imagine I was a bit struck by the news that the group fell apart this year. Seeing a video with the “classic” Colonia intro to a new song said “Colonia has broken up!”… a strange long-haired sweet-voiced girl instead of Indira, the strong, energetic figure with a very distinct voice… it was just WRONG! There is this feeling of something ending, a knot in my throat when I think about it, almost bringing tears to my eyes… there are so many feelings and events intertwined with the original Colonia…
I remember thinking how could anyone get upset over a certain music group or band breaking up… and now I am the one… the one feeling betrayed somehow… though rationally I know it’s “just a group”, they will go on creating separately and their breakup changes nothing that happened in the past… nor can it affect the future. Still a am sad… and remembering… playing old songs… and remembering…
